Writing
In third grade, we continue learning to correctly construct a variety of sentence
types and combine sentences to create cohesive paragraphs. To practice, we use
daily journal writing on topics that connect to our Reading focus skills for the
week. In addition, we spend time each day learning the basics of paragraph
construction, revision, editing and publishing. The following is a breakdown of
what you can expect throughout the school year in our writing curriculum. Scroll

First 9 Weeks:
1. Writing complete sentences. (Sentences with a complete subject AND predicate)
2. Answering questions in complete sentences by restating the question.
3. Backing up answers with evidence.
4. Using available resources to find correct spelling of unknown words.
5. The steps of the writing process: Prewrite, draft, revise, proofread, publish.
6. Using correct punctuation.
7. Staying on topic.
8. Transition words.
9. Writing a Narrative Biography
10. Sentence variety and length.
11.Main idea and details.
Second 9 weeks:
Continued work on First 9 weeks concepts, plus:
1. Utilizing other parts of speech to make sentences more interesting.
2. Writing multiple paragraph essays and stories.
3. Peer editing.
4. Paragraphs that compare.
5. Elaborating with details and strong words.
6. Writing cause/effect paragraphs.
Third 9 weeks:Continue to refine and practice skills from first semester, plus:
1.Expressing feelings in writing.
2. Writing a character sketch.
3. Writing story dialogue.
4. Sequence and time order words.
5. Summarizing/Paraphrasing
6. Writing a persuasive paragraph.
Fourth 9 Weeks:All concepts since the beginning of the year, plus:
1. Using accurate words and phrases.
2. Fact and opinion writing.
3. Paragraphs that contrast.
