Parents' Guide to Student Success
The DOCUMENTS BELOW provide an overview of what your child will learn by the end of 3rd grade in mathematics and English language arts/literacy.
WE MISSED YOU AT THE WORKSHOP, BUT DON'T WORRY LOOK BELOW TO SEE WHAT WE DISCUSSED
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, OR CONCERNS ABOUT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION!
Math
-Students must also be able to explain HOW they got an answer and WHY they know it is correct.
~Anytime you can point out "real world" uses of math to your child, it is beneficial. Students need to know there is a valid reason for learning the concepts before they will take any ownership.
~Reading is a large part of our current math assessments. More emphasis on word problems and knowing and using basic math vocabulary (Examples-sum, addend, round, estimate, etc.)
~Working with your child on test taking skills such as reading carefully and process of elimination is also helpful. Also, please encourage them to go back and check their work.
Math Tests are given weekly on the skills introduced during that week and on previously taught skills so they are not forgotten.
Math is a subject that builds on itself. Therefore, regular attendance is important in helping your child be successful in math.
Multiplication
~Memorization of multiplication facts is very important and will help determine how successful your child is in math for the second half of third grade and fourth grade. The fourth grade teachers expect them to have the facts memorized on the first day of school. Ways to accomplish this: 1. flashcards (buy or made at home) 2. Computer games/apps 3. writing the facts several times. 4. Orally drill your child in the car or at home. We generally spend ten to fifteen minutes a day on these facts but reinforcing them at home is a huge help.
